Kids Count, A History
Established in 2007 when local teachers noticed significant numbers of elementary aged students were reading below grade level. Evidence shows that students reading below grade level at the 4th grade are 4x more likely to not complete high school. Early Kids Count students received literacy tutoring to combat this statistic, with additional programming added over the years. With the support of the community, Kids Count has grown to serve 70 first through fifth grade students who attend Rawlings and Metcalfe Elementary schools.
Today, our mission is to empower children in our community to reach their full potential by providing academic support, social-emotional learning, enrichment, and mental health services all at no cost to our families.
All programming is delivered with trauma-informed, healing centered engagement practices to foster a sense of community and belonging in our afterschool program.
